SEO or Search Engine Optimisation – The art of making your site on the top of ‘Search Engine Results Pages’ also known as SERP’s.

There are many factors used by search engines to determine your pages worth or your page rank.

SEO is a very vast subject, following are some factors for SEO.

  • Domain name
  • Domain age
  • Page title
  • Keyword Density
  • Effective coding techniques
  • Link building

Domain Name

Domain Names is the most important factor for your site and it must never be compromised. Buy a domain relevant to your website’s topic and it must have the keywords you are aiming for. Example:  You want a Site for Computer Professionals in UK. Then it would be better to buy the domain name ComputerProfessionals.co.uk, as it contains two important keywords – ‘Computer Professionals’. So, if someone searching for the term ‘Computer Professionals in UK’ then you will have a benefit because of your domain name.

Geographical Location of your servers is  very Important for your site’s SERP. So if you are targeting for the US customer your site’s name should be “yoursite.us” as it will help you in Google US’s ranking. Likewise, ‘.co.uk’ is better suited for a business selling to people in the United Kingdom and so on. A ‘.com’ domain is Universal you can target the whole world and it is the most used.

Domain Age

Domain Age is also a factor for SEO.  Search engines trust a site that has been around for a long time. We all know about the Spamming sites that come and go. Think yourself – what will you trust more, a well branded business that has been operating for years or a Cool looking shack that has been open a couple of days and looks like it could close equally as quickly?

Page Title

Page Title plays a very important part in optimisation. Title should always be descriptive and must contain the keywords that you want to target. It should be like the moment the reader reads it he knows what it is all about.

  • Computers Professionals – PC Repairs and software support

You may have been thinking that How long your Title should be?

Google truncates (to the nearest fitting world) the title to 66 characters, yahoo! truncates to 75, and bing also to 66.

Search Engines will look you title till their word extent and will not see the words beyond the limit. so

TITLE- Search engine optimisation (SEO) – a beginners guide to tips, strategies, and techniques.

  • Google and Bing – Search engine optimisation (SEO) – a beginners guide to tips …
  • Yahoo – Search engine optimisation (SEO) – a beginners guide to tips, strategies …

Now that you know how the search engines look at your title it is Pointless to extend it more than 66 characters.

With some careful planning the difference in character length can be used to an advantage. For example;

  • Search engine optimisation (SEO) – tips, strategies, and techniques revealed.

The parts in normal text are what Google and Bing would display in the results page and yahoo! gives the extra bonus of what is shown in bold text.

Keyword Density

Keywords are the target phrase’s which are related to your site’s content and aim. For example, a PC seller might want to rank well for the term ‘buy Pc On-line’. It is important that the phrase does not exceed the five percent mark. Google tends to prefer even as little as two percent. Exceeding this amount may result in the search engine thinking that you are trying to spam.

Think your self, If you are listening to someone talking about a particular subject and the keep using the same phrases over and over it can get pretty annoying. So, when you think of it two to five percent is really pretty generous.

Alt tags on images also add to your overall keyword density. So, keep this in mind when planning your page.

Effective coding techniques

When your site is being crawled for info you only get a short opportunity to let the crawler know about your site’s content. A crawler might only get half way through before it feels that it has enough information to send your page off to be ranked. For this reason it is important to keep any Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript (JS) in external files. This way, the crawler doesn’t have to dig through all of your code to determine what your page is all about and possibly leave halfway through. Take this page for example. If you take a look at the source you will see that there is not much to it in the way of actual HTML, because the layout has been separated from the code by use of an external css file.

Another piece of advice is to always check that your code is valid before posting onto the web. There has been extreme (but not uncommon) instances where HTML mark-up has been confused as target keywords of a website, just because someone has forgotten to close off a tag.

Code can be easily validated at validator.w3.org and should always be checked before publishing.

Link Building

This has become the single most important factor when being positioned well in a results page. A site with the greatest information in the world will likely rank poorly against a site with lesser quality information if the latter has an abundance of pages linking to it.

This is not to say, post you links everywhere as there is also a factor called ‘link quality’ which is more or less how relevant the site is that links back to another.
